Government implemented many reforms to ensure that the supply of trees would not be depleted in the future, and it preserved some forested areas from further development. This period of time was also characterized by the increasing involvement of government and labor in the lumber industry. The expansion of the railroad to the Northwest fueled this process. The third era, from 1883 to 1940, produced technological developments and large capital investments, which allowed lumber companies to intensively log areas they could not reach before. At this time several outside investors, most from San Francisco, built mills along Puget Sound, propelling the lumber industry into the dominant role in the area's economy The beginning of the California Gold Rush in 1848 brought the second phase. During this first period the lumber industry was still in its infancy, with the Hudson Bay Company erecting the first mill in the Pacific Northwest at Fort Vancouver in 1828. Until 1848 the vast forests sustained several Indian tribes and fascinated Anglo explorers. The history of Washington's forests can be divided into four broad periods. Washington's forests have been-and continue to be-contested and coveted by many competing groups and individuals. Attitudes toward and uses of the trees have changed dramatically over time. Nonetheless, the long history of Washington's forests demonstrates that there has never been a simple, singular vision for this resource. The forests have helped define the identities of many Washingtonians and have served as a symbol for the Evergreen State. The presence of these trees has shaped Washington's economic development for decades. Ponderosa pines were prevalent in areas east of the summit of the Cascades. Until the past 120 years, tall and dense stands of Douglas fir, hemlock, spruce, and cedar blanketed most of the area from the crest of the Cascade Range to the water's edge. Washington's forests have always been a prominent element of its history. Seeing the Forest for the Trees: Placing Washington's Forests in Historical Context 3 suggested Steiner's name to Joseph Kürschner, chief editor of a new edition of Goethe's works, who asked Steiner to become the edition's natural science editor, a truly astonishing opportunity for a young student without any form of academic credentials or previous publications. In 1882, one of Steiner's teachers, Karl Julius Schröer, : Chap. In 1879, the family moved to Inzersdorf to enable Steiner to attend the Vienna Institute of Technology, where he enrolled in courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany, zoology, and mineralogy and audited courses in literature and philosophy, on an academic scholarship from 1879 to 1883, where he completed his studies and the requirements of the Ghega scholarship satisfactorily. 2 Rudolf Steiner, graduation photo from secondary school In 1869, when Steiner was eight years old, the family moved to the village of Neudörfl and in October 1872 Steiner proceeded from the village school there to the realschule in Wiener Neustadt. Steiner entered the village school, but following a disagreement between his father and the schoolmaster, he was briefly educated at home. In the first two years of Rudolf's life, the family moved twice, first to Mödling, near Vienna, and then, through the promotion of his father to stationmaster, to Pottschach, located in the foothills of the eastern Austrian Alps in Lower Austria. Johann became a telegraph operator on the Southern Austrian Railway, and at the time of Rudolf's birth was stationed in Murakirály ( Kraljevec) in the Muraköz region of the Kingdom of Hungary, Austrian Empire (present-day Donji Kraljevec in the Međimurje region of northernmost Croatia). Steiner's father, Johann(es) Steiner (1829–1910), left a position as a gamekeeper in the service of Count Hoyos in Geras, northeast Lower Austria to marry one of the Hoyos family's housemaids, Franziska Blie (1834 Horn – 1918, Horn), a marriage for which the Count had refused his permission. Biography Childhood and education The house where Rudolf Steiner was born, in present-day Croatia Just as the eye perceives colours and the ear sounds, so thinking perceives ideas." A consistent thread that runs through his work is the goal of demonstrating that there are no limits to human knowledge. He based his epistemology on Johann Wolfgang Goethe's world view, in which "thinking…is no more and no less an organ of perception than the eye or ear. Steiner advocated a form of ethical individualism, to which he later brought a more explicitly spiritual approach. In the third phase of his work, beginning after World War I, Steiner worked on various ostensibly applied projects, including Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, and anthroposophical medicine. In a second phase, beginning around 1907, he began working collaboratively in a variety of artistic media, including drama, dance and architecture, culminating in the building of the Goetheanum, a cultural centre to house all the arts. His philosophical work of these years, which he termed " spiritual science", sought to apply what he saw as the clarity of thinking characteristic of Western philosophy to spiritual questions, : 291 differentiating this approach from what he considered to be vaguer approaches to mysticism. In the first, more philosophically oriented phase of this movement, Steiner attempted to find a synthesis between science and spirituality. His teachings are influenced by Christian Gnosticism (for heresiologists it is little doubt that these are neognosticism ). At the beginning of the twentieth century he founded an esoteric spiritual movement, anthroposophy, with roots in German idealist philosophy and theosophy. Steiner gained initial recognition at the end of the nineteenth century as a literary critic and published works including The Philosophy of Freedom. Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner (27 or 25 February 1861 – 30 March 1925) was an Austrian occultist, social reformer, architect, esotericist, and claimed clairvoyant. * Add support for new Fourcc for E-AC3, AV1, GeoVision * Fix hardware decoding for some AMD GPU drivers * Fix some HEVC hardware decoding on Windows and crashes when aspect ratio changes * Several improvements on the SRT modules (including streamID) * Improve SMB compatibility by changing the read size * Improve AudioCD support (audio/data mixed mode, musicbrainz) * Fix support for screen capture on macOS with avcapture * Fix a regression in parsing secondary source MRLs Here is the full changelog of VLC Media Player 3.0,17: Other changes of note include support for uncompressed audio in mp4, HTTP2 memory usage improvements, support for Fourcc for E-AC3, AV1, and GeoVision, support for spatial audio on iOS/tvOS, and updated third-party libraries. Users had to use video converters in the past, if they did not want to view DAV videos on DVR365 players, or could not, because the players are only available for Windows PCs.ĭTS LBR, the LBR stands for Low Bit Rate, is the second addition introduced in VLC Media Player 3.0.17. VLC Media Player 2.2.3Īll of this changes with the release of VLC 2.2.3. I was not the only VLC user who could not get resume to work and I even tried to install add-ons for the program that supposedly got the resume feature working but they too did not work properly or reliable. That's one of the reasons why I use other media players, SMPlayer to be precise. While VLC Media Player did support resume for some time, the feature never worked properly whenever I tried it. When it comes to features that I like in video players, resume may not be at the top of my list but it is a nice to have feature that I expect media clients to support. While the display still functions thanks to the arrow-style hour hand and large minute hand, legibility would likely be better served by a brushed handset or perhaps a dial that doesn’t sit as far recessed into the case. In lower light or shadow, the dial appears black and the polished hands appear nearly invisible, leaving only the luminous elements at their center to function for legibility. In bright direct light, the dial has a texture similar to teflon, with the recessed markers adding a warm sandy tone and additional depth as the rhodium plated polished hands catch and reflect light. Like the Seamaster 300, the Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre’s dial changes considerably depending on the available light and viewing angle. The entire kit comes in a large black box secured by a combination lock – no points awarded for guessing the correct three-digit code. If the nato isn’t your jam, the Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre LE comes with a steel bracelet (with a 007 signed clasp) as well as a strap-changing tool and a loupe. It is a very nice strap, but then again, with a list price upwards of $150 USD, it has to be really good. Unlike the Bathyscape nato, the Omega strap is soft and pliable right out of the box, requiring no force to fold the tail back into the keeper. Much like the premium nato on the Blancpain Bathyscaphe, the Omega nato features high quality brushed and signed hardware. I have a similar grey-black nato on my Omega Seamaster 2254, but aside from function and color, this is little comparison between my $15 strap and the one that comes mounted to the Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition James Bond watch. The nato works beautifully for the case and dial and the grey tones match up nicely with the warm coloring of the faux-vintage lume on the markers and hands. In person, the Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition James Bond watch feels a lot like the standard Omega Seamaster 300 save for the included grey and black striped nato strap – the same Daniel Craig is purported to wear in Spectre. While I prefer the original logo and “12” marker, the lollipop seconds hand looks really cool.įunctionality is the same as the Seamaster 300, with the Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition rocking Omega’s Master Co-Axial 8400, 300m water resistance with a screw down crown, and a domed sapphire crystal with an internal anti-reflective coating. The Omega Seamaster 300 Spectre Limited Edition also hosts a larger logo, brand, and model indication on the dial and deletes the “12” marker seen on the standard Omega Seamaster 300. The other changes are on the dial where the stock spear-tipped seconds hand has been swapped for a lollipop hand that appears nearly white in most light. Twelve-hour bezels are seeing something of a comeback, and I couldn’t be more supportive of this trend it’s a useful “complication” that doesn’t add any specific cost or complexity to a sports watch. The ceramic bezel uses a Liquidmetal scale, and its functionality is uncomplicated, simple, and rather powerful, not unlike Bond. While I think the dive bezel of the standard model is more appropriate for a Seamaster, the 12-hour bezel perfectly matches the ethos of Bond, who travels far more than he dives. The bezel is the functional change for the limited edition, where Omega has opted for a bi-directional 12-hour bezel. One of my favorite features, though, is the ability to write macros that drive things like hiding action bars when I'm not mousing over them. Using Bartender4, you can change the positioning, size, and transparency of every action bar, which goes a long way in personalizing your own UI. This addon fully replaces your action bar with one that is completely customizable. It’s easy to spend a few hours soaking in the atmosphere of the warm and cozy dining room, which is usually filled with a mix of well-to-do Parisians, film industry veterans, and travelers with an appreciation of classic French gastronomy. The atmosphere is chic and retro, without the pretentiousness you would expect from a celebrity-frequented haunt. Many come to Fouquet's to see and be seen, but the seasonal menu by three Michelin-starred Chef Pierre Gagnaire makes it a worthy stop for more than just a cocktail. Beyond the luxury goods, a highlight is the rooftop terrace, which offers a spectacular view of the city. On the fourth floor, one of the broadest shoe selections in the world boasts over 200 brands ranging from Veja Shoemakers to Maison Margiela. Some labels, like Ester Manas (a sustainable and size-inclusive fashion brand) offer exclusive pieces you won’t find anywhere else. You’ll find almost every major luxury brand under Galeries Lafayette Haussmann’s roof but the department store also makes a point of spotlighting emerging designers. And with over 750,000 square feet of retail space, beautifully designed window displays, and special events, it's easily one of the best places to shop in Paris. The French chain's flagship location in the 9th arrondissement features a striking domed roof with stained glass windows by master glassmaker Jacques Gruber. Historic department store Galeries Lafayette Haussmann isn’t just one of Paris's first “luxury bazaars” but also an emblem of Art Nouveau architecture. You could speed through the audio guide in an hour, get a view of the Place de la Concorde from the covered balcony, and take in the jaw-dropping Cabinet des Glaces, a mirror-walled boudoir not unlike the hall of mirrors in Versailles, covered in paintings. Key to the visit is the audio guide, which leans theatrical. Open to the public for the first time in 250 years, its new incarnation as an immersive museum experience allows visitors to explore the 18th century apartments of the Garde-Meuble intendants, recreated and restored to their original layout and design, as well as the structure’s grand reception halls filled with period furnishings, paintings, and objets d’art. Given that it is only a year old, it remains moderately trafficked but the word is out. Perched over the Place de la Concorde, the museum occupies the former royal Garde Meuble-the depository for the King’s furniture collections, crown jewels, tapestries, and decorative arts-and what later became the country’s naval headquarters for 200 years. This recent addition to the capital’s cultural offering is unlike any other in the city, largely by dint of its heritage and size. The spaces it does occupy covers the usual terrain: streetwear and luxury ready-to-wear which includes pieces exclusive to La Samaritaine, clean beauty and classic perfumers, handbags and fine jewelry, and several rooms used for rotating thematic installations. Approximately 215,000 square feet are devoted to retail space in this complex, which includes the Cheval Blanc hotel, office space, and housing, making it the smallest of the city’s department stores (the others are Le Bon Marché, Printemps, and Galeries Lafayette). But it's an Art Deco and Art Nouveau wonder which is the primary reason to visit. Locals used to shop here for everything from light bulbs and garden supplies to dresses, but now it's a gallery of sorts for designer clothes, beauty brands, and a handful of food and Champagne concept spaces throughout the shop. But this one has a legacy that laid dormant for 16 years: The 19th century landmark reopened in 2021 after a $900 million restoration by LVMH, and swapped the utilitarian focus for one decidedly more upscale. Did Paris need another department store? Certainly not. If the animal can be saved, it’s pushed back into the water. When strandings occur, Tibbatts is the first called. For example, the page says Windows 11 22H2 will be supported until October 8, 2024. Note that the Windows 11 Lifecycle page includes some information about individual versions of Windows 11 and when support will end for them. Microsoft will update the official page Windows 11 Lifecycle page when an end-of-support date is available. Microsoft hasn't announced anything yet, and Windows 11 will continue to be supported with security updates for many years into the foreseeable future. If Microsoft sticks to the late 2024 release plan, the company could end support for Windows 11 in late 2028, four years later.Īt any rate, it's much too early to worry about Windows 11's support cycle. Microsoft will continue supporting Windows 10 with security updates until October 14, 2025, which is just over four years after Windows 11 was released. Windows 11 was released on October 5, 2021, more than six years later. Windows 10 was released on July 29, 2015. We expect Windows 11 will be supported with security updates until at least late 2028. Note that, if you're just using Windows in a virtual machine, both Windows 10 and Windows 11 work just fine when you install them without a product key-they just nag you that they're not activated, and it's possible to buy an upgrade from inside Windows 10 or Windows 11 to get rid of the nags. (There aren't many good reasons to buy Windows 11 Pro for home users, however, and we recommend Windows 11 Home for most people.) We expect Microsoft will sell Windows 12 for a similar price. Microsoft sells Windows 11 Home for $139.99 and Windows 11 Pro for $199.99. If you're building your own PC, you can buy Windows separately. If their PCs don't get an upgrade, most people will get a new version of Windows like Windows 12 when they buy a new PC. After all, the company pushed aggressively to upgrade Windows 7 users to Windows 10, and it's now pushing to upgrade Windows 10 users to Windows 11, where possible. We would be surprised if Microsoft began charging for Windows 12 upgrades. As usual, Microsoft is attempting to create an interface that balances the needs of a touch interface with traditional keyboard-and-mouse interfaces. Zac Bowden over at Windows Central reported that his sources at Microsoft said this image "is representative of the design goals that Microsoft is hoping to achieve with the next version of Windows." He also reports that Microsoft is working on a larger redesign of other elements of Windows, including a new lock screen and notification center. As it "leaked" during an official Microsoft presentation, it's almost certainly something Microsoft wanted to tease Windows enthusiasts with. This could be a prototype interface for Windows 12. The weather displayed on the top-left corner of the screen, over the desktop background.System icons (like the system tray and notification icons) displayed on the top-right corner of the screen, over the desktop background.A floating search box on the top of the screen, in the middle.A floating taskbar, rather than an edge-to-edge taskbar. If you look closely, however, you will see the following changes: Microsoft momentarily shows an image of Microsoft Teams running on a Windows 11-style desktop. The leak comes from the Microsoft Ignite keynote held on October 12, 2022. Likewise, the operating system that started as Windows 10X for dual-screen devices evolved into Windows 11. The operating system may not even be called "Windows 12" and may be called something else-after all, we were expecting Windows 9 after Windows 8, but Microsoft skipped right over Windows 9 and gave us Windows 10 instead. The 2024 date reflects Microsoft's internal thinking, and it's easy to see how it could be pushed back or changed entirely. Microsoft is on a yearly release cycle where major updates are released in the fall, so we would expect Windows 12 release date in fall 2024.īear in mind that Microsoft hasn't yet announced Windows 12 or a release date for it as of February 2023. Microsoft is planning on releasing Windows 12 in 2024, according to credible reports. Windows 12 Release Date: When Will It Be? In fact, Microsoft has already shown off a prototype new Windows desktop design that could be part of Windows 12 "Next Valley." Here's everything we know. Microsoft is reportedly working on a new version of Windows to replace Windows 11. |
